Battlefield Bot for the Rest of Us

The ROMP Outfitted for Surveillance
The Remotely Operated Mobile Platform (ROMP) created by roboticist Chris Rogers is a sophisticated RC platform. The robot is a rugged, all-terrain vehicle that is ready to do your evil or not-so-evil bidding. The magic sits on top of a well-engineered suspension system that looks like it could take a beating. You probably shouldn't launch this thing off of your roof, but it should handle your backyard or curbs just fine.
For you devious types out there, check out the WROMP -- the older brother of the ROMP. WROMP comes loaded with a firearm. You can drive the 'bot around and shoot stuff that you can't see. On second thought, that sounds like a really bad idea. Don't try this at home folks!
WROMP is designed for reconnaissance and bomb investigation as well as remote detonation of incendiary devices. The generic ROMP platform can be outfitted with any number of devices, from a custom robotic arm, to a standard off the shelf video camera. I'd like to see this come with GPS, a hardened shell, a SICK laser, and some intelligent programming -- presto bammo, you have yourself a surveillance sentry!
No word on power or price, or whether Chris plans on marketing the device at all. You can put the ROMP on my list of cool gadgets. See more pictures here at
Chris Roger's portfolio.
